The USS Bache was a Destroyer in the United States Navy named after EHS and USNA graduate George M. Bache. He established himself as an elite sailor for his time served on the Mississippi River throughout the Civil War.

When the Civil War broke out, a vast majority of EHS young alumni and students joined the Confederate forces fighting for secession. Six young men chose to serve for the U.S. While EHS students who fought in the Confederacy served in many different roles from private to captain five of the six men who fought for the Union were officers. They all had prosperous military careers and were men of stature hailing from Maryland, the District of Columbia and Pennsylvania.
