The Macanese People
Based in the city of Macau SAR, the Macanese are a minority that is rarely heard of on the international stage. The definitive characteristic of this ethnic group is that they are a result of colonial interactions between China and Portugal, since Macau was owned by Portugal for over 400 years (1557-1999). During this period, different ethnic groups brought along by Portuguese trade mixed in Macau and formed the Macanese identity.
With a size of around 8000 today, they make up just over one percent of Macau's total population. The unique traditions of this small Eurasian community is heading in decline after Macau's handover to China, as they are facing threats from the encroaching Chinese influence. I believe the Macanese have a long and fascinating history that deserves preservation.
The Catonsville Nine: A Protest for Generations
On May 17, 1968, nine United States citizens committed an act of protest that would dramatically impact not only their lives but the overall culture of the 1970s; however, their names are hardly known today, despite their lasting effect on protest structure and culture in the United States. Through this project, I hope to change that by informing more people on the Catonsville Nine, what they did in 1968, and how their bravery through civil disobedience continues to affect us today.
My History: The Howell Family in Atlanta
My entire life I have been interested in my family history. Presented with the opportunity to explore a topic of my choice for this project, I decided that this would be the perfect time to explore my interest in my family's history in Atlanta, Georgia. My family has lived in Atlanta for over 200 years and in that time they have accomplished and contributed a lot. For this specific project I decided to focus on three of those accomplishments: the Howell Lumber Mills, the creation of the newspaper, the Atlanta Constitution, and the Howell family's involvement with Georgia politics. My final focus will not be on the accolades of the Howell family but rather the lasting impact they have made on Atlanta. My exhibit will also highlight the lives and accomplishments of two men in my family: Evan Park Howell and Clark Howell. Through this exhibit I want to show how my family has grown and changed along with the city of Atlanta, and how they have, in turn, also affected the development of the city.
