Episcopal's Attempt on Change

Notable Change

After receiving backlash for their lack of effort in making sure every student felt heard, accepted, and safe, Episcopal created the Taskforce for racism, understanding, and belonging. They also created the OCE, to officially start the beginning of trying to achieve those goals of a safe and welcoming environment for all who attend/attended EHS. After the creation of these two programs, another program called the Black Alumni Network was created shortly after. The network started as a way for older black alumni to foster relationships with young black alumni to eventually reconnect with the school and start this new program. These relationships were important to further educate current students and alumni about black history at EHS. It is also used as mentorship for some students.

The Importance

The creation of these three amazing programs marked the beginning of the change to our black history on this 'holy hill.' It is important to recognize that Episcopal has come a long way from its very first integration in 1968, and has lots more work to be done. Thanks to the creation of these programs, students, faculty, and alumni have a greater chance of being heard and seen as important members of this community.

The Work Is Not Done

Whilst I applaud Episcopal for the work that they have done to combat racism on this campus, the work is not done. An effort has to be done in order for this systematic issue to be resolved. There has to be more education for those who don't understand. There has to be a change in the system and effective punishment for those who continue to commit acts of discrimination on this campus. Without the work, change will never be done. The students and faculty of the Black Student Alliance are demanding that the administration, leaders, and student body effectively change their approach so that combatting racism can be done.

As I am about to depart from Episcopal in the spring, I hope Episcopal continues to put in the work of understanding black history and acknowledge the present and future work being done to create a healthy and happy environment for all.
