Then to Now: 2018 - 2023
The World Around Us
Over the past five years, the world around us has gone through major social and racial movements along with a global pandemic that has impacted the experiences of Black Students on Episcopal’s campus. After failing to learn about the struggles of minority students, Episcopal could not keep up with the evolving social climate. This led to suffering while trying to generate a safe and comforting environment for all. That time of suffering has been recognized and is improving drastically as the years go by. Episcopal has made notable changes to make sure, every student of every race, ethnicity, and sexual orientation feels welcomed and part of this community.
A Place for Everyone
With help from the Office of Community and Equity, every member of the community has a designed 'affinity space' for those who share an "important aspect of their social, ethnic, or cultural identity."
"Affinity Spaces at Episcopal are facilitated by adults in order to allow students of shared identity to gather, talk in a safe space about issues related to that identity, and transfer that discussion into action that makes for a more equitable experience for everyone at school. Our facilitators focus each individual space around three principles — rejuvenation, affirmation, and self-love — with the overarching objective that students develop and retain the confidence to bring their complete selves into full participation and sharing in Episcopal’s culture more broadly." -
