The Male Perspective on the First 48

This project is a documentation of the first 48 girls to attend Episcopal Highschool and the perspectives of the boys who already attend.  For those who may not be familiar, the term "First 48" represents the first group of young women to ever attend Episcopal High School. The school had been all-boarding, all-boys up until the fall of 1991. The decision to go coed was not an easy one. Episcopal had been an all-boys school ever since it was founded in 1839. It required years worth of research, committee meetings, and painstaking voting processes. During this time period, coeducation was a hot topic all around the nation, and everyone had their own opinion. The purpose of this project is to learn more about how the boys attending EHS felt during the transition to coeducation. Were the girls welcomed onto campus? Did the student body agree with the school's decision? What did alumni and faculty think?

The next page contains a timeline that details the entire process that led up to the school's ultimate decision to implement coeducation.
